Roy Lee McCarty, Sr.

Roy Lee McCarty, age 71, of Palestine, Texas, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, the 18th day of August 2022. Mr. McCarty was born in DeRidder, Louisiana, on the 15th day of November 1950. He worked in the oil field and as a rancher most of his life.
Mr. McCarty is survived by his children, Hope Smith and husband Cornelius, Roy McCarty and wife Shasta, and James Armstrong, all of Palestine, Texas. He also leaves behind other family members and friends.
The family will host a memorial service to celebrate Mr. McCarty's life at a later date.
Cremation services for Roy Lee McCarty are in care of Rhone Funeral Home, 3900 S. State Highway 19, Palestine, Texas.

Roy and I made many memories. We liked to fish, and drink some beer, talk trash, target practice, watch TV, argue… the list goes on. But here’s the thing about Roy…
Roy Lee McCarty will forever in my heart, be a hero.. be ‘my’ hero. You see, about 10 years ago, he was on a job with my then 22 year-old son, and another young man. Fire broke out on the 2nd or 3rd story of an abandoned building, very close to an oxygen tank and another.. acetylene, I think. Pardon, if my exact details are hazy; I get emotional speaking of this.
My son said Roy began yelling for them to vacate the building. He was going to stay and put out the fire. My son and the other boy wouldn’t go, arguing they didn’t want to leave him, or wanted him to flee with them. That’s when Roy got mad. He began screaming at them. Got in their faces, threatened them if they didn’t go…and the young men fled. Roy put the fire out and went down to talk to the still, very upset boys. He told them the fire was so close, that it was likely to have set the tanks off into an explosion so quickly, that they might not have had time to exit the building.. killing them all. And that’s why he had to stay, and they had to go. My son and Roy remained very good friends ever since. And he’s been my hero ever since. RIP, Roy. We love you.
